Living up a modern lifestyle shouldn’t be hampered by anything. Learn how to combine conservative and modern designs in one house.
The house is in East Hampton, United States. The project is designed by Bates Masi Architects. Intended for a newlywed couple, this house gets a modern touch that suit a growing family. The surrounding community has been there since the 19th century. It causes the surrounding houses’ designs are more conservative. Thus, the couple wants to maintain the historical context of the environment while adopting the newest interior.
To achieve the goal, the architects take inspiration from the agrarian buildings nearby. They used a certain structural system to generate a fake ground plane. It conceals the building’s scale when observed from the outside. Columns and steel girders that support seven inches thick of glue-laminated wood trunks made the structure. Thus, the traditional structural elements and wood framing are unnecessary.
The structure is unique and practical. The same wood material for the foundation can be used as the stair treads. Wooden materials for the ceiling can form elements for unique lighting. The method is in every corner of the house.
The house is divided into two floors. Living room and entertainment purposes are placed on the first floor while the family has private rooms on the second floor. Surrounding the bedrooms, native grasses grow on an elevated ground plane. There is an outdoor space within for family gatherings. It has a spa with ocean view and a fire pit.
The house is an open space. It consists of several rooms divided with partitions. The modern interior fills the living room with black panelling. Two units of unique lighting hang from the barn-inspired ceiling. Next to it, there is a gathering room. It houses an elongated table and some chairs that can act as a dining set.
Modern elements are also used in the bathroom. This semi-open space has some stone textures on its walls. The kitchen is tidy, consisting of a white kitchen set to create a clear vibe. There is also a kitchen island that acts as a dining table. In the same space, there is a staircase with a black striped partition. The barbecue area lays on the terrace.
